INTRODUCTION

To make 1 cocktail

1 ounce fresh lemon juice

3 ounces bourbon

1/2 grenadine

3 to 4 ice cubes

1 slice orange

A dash of cold club soda

An 8-ounce wine glass, chilled

PROCEDURE

Combine the lemon juice, bourbon, grenadine and ice cues in a mixing glass. Place a shaker on top of the mixing glass and, grasping them firmly together, shake vigorously. Remove the shaker, place a strainer on top of the mixing glass, and pour into the chilled glass. Garnish with the slice of orange. Rinse the shaker with the dash of club soda and pour into the glass.

RESULTS

So I had to wait until the end of my drink to give this a rating because I was teetering between a three and a four the whole time. Right off the bat my reaction was that it was too sour, I was looking for orange flavors (only because my head knew there was an orange AKA the garnish), and I wish I had used my lesser bourbon for this. I was just really wanting some Buffalo tonight though and hey no regrets, at the end of the day I enjoyed my drink. Side note: I'm traveling to FL next weekend and I know a small liquor shop that I might be able to get a back up Buffalo at so fingers crossed!!

Anyways I ended up with 4/5 stars, I added a touch more grenadine (homemade and my first time trying it.. yummm!) and I think that helped a lot. I also added my orange into the drink which I would have done inherently but I was trying to take a first sip selfie and my nose couldn't get past it so in the garnish went lol. And we all know how I feel about using wine glasses for things that aren't wine. So all these things considered and the fact that coincidentally the drink grew on me with more sips, I landed on 4/5 stars. Well actually now that I think about it I wouldn't make this again, not even with the adjustments so I'm changing it to 3/5. So I guess all things considered it still gets 3/5..

Below are the images, note in the first one I got a new plant!! You can barely see it behind the club soda, it's a mint plant and I got three others so hopefully we'll be drinking mint juleps soon :)

First things first, squeezing the lemon, I totally forgot to take pics of the bourbon being poured so here's the inside of the mixer with the bourbon and lemon and it looks super weird like there's ice but there's def not. Ok next is grenadine out of my cool container I got from my Grandpa and he got it from a bourbon distillery (I forgot the story :(.. I'll have to call and ask). Here's a pic of the mixer with ice and for once I added the right amount of ice! 4 cubes to be exact! Chilled glass, drink in the glass, rinsed the mixer with the dash of club soda. Drink selfie and drink selfie after dunking the orange so my nose could fit.

DISCUSSION

Super exciting, this is the first recipe in the whole book, I haven't been going in order because that just didn't make sense to do. But it's fun to know this was #1! Also had to give this one a google because with a name like that you know there's a story.

The Ward 8 or Ward Eight is a cocktail originating in 1898 in Boston, Massachusetts United States at the bar of the Gilded Age restaurant Locke-Ober.[1]
In 1898 Democratic political czar Martin M. Lomasney hoped to capture a seat in the state's legislature, the General Court of Massachusetts. Lomasney held considerable power in the city for nearly 50 years. The story goes that the drink was created to honor his election, and the city's Ward 8 which historically delivered him a winning margin. In 1915 the Santa Clara Company registered "Ward 8" as a trademark with the United States Patent Office claiming use since November 1912 and published a notice that they would prosecute any infringement. - LINK

Ok well less exciting than I'd hoped but oh well. If you go to the link, their pic looks kinda like mine so at least I know I made it correctly :)

Well cheers for tonight, see you tomorrow? Same place, same timeish!
